On Silence and Approval

Apparently the site is suddenly getting more traffic, so I’m going to co-opt the purpose of the site and post something political and controversial.

A friend posted this article on Facebook: Why you might have lost all your Jewish friends this week and didn’t even know it.

There are several issues with this piece, but let me start by saying that I absolutely and unabashedly support peace and safety for Jews everywhere.

The issues:

  1. As written, the piece completely ignores the Israeli government and the extreme right wing in that country that is focused on Palestinian extermination.
  2. It does what every Zionist piece of propaganda does: it conflates condemnation of Israeli government actions with condemnations of Jewish people in general. That’s a convenient way of ensuring that an authoritarian regime has free rein in taking over the region.
  3. “I am also not saying that silence is support. I do not believe that everyone who hasn’t posted support for the Jewish people and for Israel is complicit.” Should be rendered as “Silence IS support.” It always is, regardless of the issue. And what this article is advocating for is support of one side (Israel’s government), at the cost to the other side (Palestinian people) with no regard to the history of the first side’s actions. Or to put it more bluntly, while the article indicates that silence is condemnation of Jews, in the current world climate silence is actually support for the Israeli government.

That being said, while I support peace and safety for Jews everywhere, I also support peace and safety for Palestinians and all humans everywhere.

I don’t know, is that FU enough?
